The Debt Counsellor Training Programme

The Debt Counsellor Training Programme has been designed to equip learners with:

The knowledge and skills required to perform the Debt Cousellors role and the skills to competently perform the duties of a Debt Counsellor. This will allow the learners who successfully complete the intervention to register with the National Credit Regulator as Debt Counsellors.

Who should attend:

Individuals who wish to register as Debt Cousellors or wish to have a clear knowledge of the role that Debt Counsellors will play within the context of the NCA.

Entry requirements:

  • grade 12 certificate or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification
  • Minimum of two years working experience in any of the following fields:
    • Consumer protection;
    • Legal or Para-legal services;
    • Accounting or Financial services;
    • Education or training individuals;
    • Counselling of Individuals; and
    • General business environment experience.

Certification:

Learners will be assessed and successful candidates will be awarded a certificate of successful
completion endorsed by both the IOB and the National Credit Regulator.

Unit Standards, NQF Levels and Credits:

Currently there are no recognized unit standards for Debt Couselling.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of The Debt Counsellor Training Programme learners should be able to:

  • Identify how and when a consumer can apply for debt review
  • Determine and identify whether a consumer is over-indebted
  • Read and interpret Credit Bureau reports
  • Explain when the granting of credit would be considered as reckless credit
  • Restructure debt
  • Monitor consumer payments
  • Issue a Clearance Certificate
  • Offer support services and make referrals
  • Negotiate an agreement or structure a deal in an authentic work situation
  • Communicate verbally with clients in a financial environment/context
  • Compose texts required in the business environment/context
  • Analyse and explain the impact of an individual's personal interactive style on his/her relationship with a client
  • Manage time and work processes in a business environment
  • Achieve personal effectiveness in Business environment
  • Explain the legal environment of the industry
  • Gather and manage information to inform decision making
  • Manage personal Finance
  • Conduct their Debt Counsellors' duties and responsibilities effectively and professionally and
  • Register with the NCR as qualified Debt Counsellors.

  2. Over-indebtedness and reckless lending
  3. Debt Counselling
  4. Support Services and Referrals

Costs:

R5 425-00 (IOB Member)
R5 655-00 (IOB Non-Member)

Duration and Dates:

The entire course is conducted over a period of 5 days covering 4 modules.
