ABOUT THE COURSE
Course Outline & Description
The course is designed to provide delegates with a functional overview of the origins of ethics and an understanding of the factors which led to the application of certain ethics principles for business and their weaknesses. In the process, delegates are equipped with essentials for critical thinking to improve the quality of decision making. Combining critical thinking with knowledge of the fundamentals of ethics enables delegates to make a qualitative difference in the application of ethics in their business and personal environments instead of unthinkingly adopting someone else’s ideas. At its core, ethics is simple. We should keep it that way and not allow popular jargon to shroud it in mysticism.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER – CHRIS VAN DER WALT
I started my working life in law as a public prosecutor and migrated to financial services and banking more than 35 years ago. I was the COO for a listed private bank and founded a life assurer during the late 1990’s. I completed an M Phil in Applied Business Ethics with distinction on the topic: The effect of directors’ remuneration on ethical decision making in companies” – using the demise of Regal Treasury Private Bank and Corpcapital Bank as case studies; and published “The Good life – a business ethics guide for corporate junkies” during 2010. I am currently working on a project to motivate the development of an African business ethics regime considering prevailing African values and cultural conditions where the majority is daily engaged in a struggle to survive.
I consult on anti-money laundering, supply-chain and ethics risk assessment systems and methodology and conducts independent whistle-blowing related investigations. (See www.easefica.co.za and www.ethicsafrica.co.za )
