Coins in South Africa

The first coins were introduced in South Africa in 1652. These coins were in fact Dutch Guilders and they become the first official currency.

South African coins have been made out of copper, silver and even gold and there have been many different designs used over the years.

Banknotes in South Africa

The first banknotes used in South Africa were handwritten and first issued in Cape Town in 1782. This was naturally before South Africa existed as South Africa. These notes had a government fiscal handstamp to indicate the date of issue and the note value.

The very first South African banknote was the ‘Burgers Pond’, which bore the portrait of Thomas Francois Burger who was the first South African president. This note was issued in 1874.
