Get a Smart ID or Renew Your Passport at a Bank in South Africa

South Africans can apply for a smart ID card or renew their passport at a Home Affairs-supported bank branch after registering on the eHomeAffairs platform. This system allows users to book application slots at Department of Home Affairs (DHA) branches or participating bank branches, helping to avoid long queues.

Completing applications at a Home Affairs-approved bank branch can help you avoid long queues and save you much time and frustration.

Launched in April 2016, eHomeAffairs initially served citizens aged 30–35 and was available at select branches of four major banks. It has since expanded to 30 bank branches nationwide, with Absa, FNB, Nedbank, Standard Bank, Discovery Bank, and Investec participating.

Registering on the platform requires basic personal information, including an ID number, name, and contact details for login verification via one-time PIN. Once logged in, users can start a new application, specifying whether it is for themselves or someone else. The system pre-fills key details, and applicants must confirm how they obtained their South African citizenship.

After submitting the application, users must upload a copy of their ID before making payment. Payment is completed via Internet or mobile banking after adding banking details to the platform.

While payment is not required immediately, users must finalise it before booking an appointment at their chosen bank branch.
